About Martha:
Martha Rucker, an artist and art educator for 30 years, was born in South Carolina. She moved to New York City as a young teenager and attended Junior High and High School there.
She won a scholarship to The Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) where she received an Associate Degree. After earning her BA and MA from The City University of New York (CUNY) she obtained a job teaching art in elementary school in The Newark Public School System in New Jersey.
Martha guided, motivated, encouraged her students and exposed them to many things they hadn’t imagined and hopefully opened their minds to their own creativity. Her students won many art awards over the years. She developed a Mosaic Collage technique when doing a sample to introduce her students to the art of collage. Thinking that tiny pieces would be too frustrating for the kids she worked out a sample using larger pieces. The students did well. After the project ended Martha was so enthused by the this new way of doing a collage that she continued working this way. She had found her medium. Her collages (Mosaic-Collages) went from the simple Peanuts characters used in the samples all the way to intricate, realistic figurative and floral pieces.
After searching the local library’s picture file for resource material, she started using family albums, and finally started taking her own pictures. She entered some area art shows, won recognition and was accepted into an Internationally Juried Art Exhibition in Madison Square Garden in 1982. Mosaic Collage is a unique form of art that involves cut paper inlayed in mosaic fashion to create a realistic image. Photographic images are sometimes used as part of the backgrounds.
After a trip to Senegal in 1990 came the ‘Faces of Senegal’ series. Martha returned to South Carolina in 2006, and in 2009 was motivated by Barack Obama’s Inauguration to begin new pieces. She likes doing portraits, statement pieces and integrating technology into the creative process. The process, by it’s nature is slow, but Martha finds it gratifying and relaxing.
